The Light Never Ends

Description

I took this photo for my digital imagery assignment and below is the explanation. Both the photo and explanation are very rushed so I'm not really expecting a good mark :|

[EXPLANATION]
This photograph was taken with a Nikon dslr D3100 with a standard lens of 18-55mm. It’s dimensions are 3525 x 2334. For this photograph I set the shutter speed at 3.7 seconds in a completely dark room. The iso was set at 100 and the f number was 8. My aim was to only let in the light from the torch and therefore create an effect known as “light painting”.

Although the amount of light let in was important in this photograph the shutter speed was crucial as it decided how long the camera would let in light. When in a totally dark room you can see the trail of light left behind for a second but not the image of a whole 1.7 second’s worth. To me, this is why I find light painting so special.

Very few edits were made on this photograph. In fact, only one edit was made. I chose to crop this photo to remove the small amount of light coming through from a window that was very distracting. Once I had cropped my image to a comfortable size I was happy with I ensured that the “painting” [of light] was in the centre of my photograph as to avoid it looking lost.

In this particular “painting” I lapped my drawing a few times to make it prominent but not so many that it would become messy. For me, this is quite symbolic because it was created with light. I feel that if it was created with something else the meaning would not exist. I think that one of the means a person could possibly get from this photograph is that light never runs out as the sign I have drawn is the infinity sign. Light is often associated with hope and I am a firm believer that there will always be hope in the world and it will never cease to be far away. Hence, light never ends.
